ALSO I'd love to know her thoughts on Gary because their threads are so fucked up.

OK NO IN ALL SERIOUSNESS THOUGH hey Gary, hey Gary, have you ever heard of the suspension bridge effect?

Gary is a special person for Ellen; not because he claimed to love her, but because he's the first person to find out the truth about her and still claim to love her. He's the first to not immediately flee in terror. He's the first to not look down on her or call her a monster. Given what she's been through, that means the world to her; even if she knows that he wasn't in his right mind during that conversation.

Ellen is of the belief that people could never truly love her. They have this image of her that they build up in their minds, and she has to live up to that image if she wants their continued affections. It's not the real Ellen that anyone has ever truly loved; it's just this image of her. When people say they want to learn more about her, they don't really mean that. They don't want to learn about her, really. They just want her to conform to their expectations.

Gary alone was different, and Ellen understands that it's because they're alike in a lot of ways. She doesn't have memories of the time Gary met her at Waverly Bay, of course, but she's gathered enough from her interactions with him here to pick up on that much. Gary's mother did not love him, and Gary's father barely acknowledged him. That's immensely similar to Ellen's own home situation, and it makes her feel an intrinsic connection between the two of them.

No one could understand her, because no one's experienced the things that she has - with the exception of Gary, and that makes Gary unique. So maybe Gary doesn't currently feel the same way he did before; maybe he doesn't love her or want to know about her anymore. But she's fine with that, because she's certain he could come to love her - on a level that, she thinks, perhaps no one else could come close to reaching.

Of course, that isn't to say that Ellen has let her guard down around Gary. Gary knows too much about her; Gary knows things that no one should know about her. If Gary wanted to, he could make life for Ellen very difficult, and she's aware of that. But for the moment, she's also certain that she has enough control over him that he isn't a threat to her just yet, and she intends to keep it that way. Gary is clearly terrified of her, and she finds that charming, too, in its own way. Love is power, after all. Love is absolute control over another human being. Love is someone being willing to die for the sake of another.

And Gary is clearly on his way there, even if he doesn't realize it yet. Even if he thinks he doesn't love Ellen anymore.

Ellen is sure that, with just a little convincing on her part, he'll come to love her once more. After all, he's already proven himself receptive to her influence.
