Prompts

Arrival: So you've just arrived in Nyoi-Cho. Congratulations! You must be so excited about having your wish granted. Or maybe you're upset that the result wasn't quite what you expected? If that's the case, then that's too bad! There are no take backs and no redoes, so you're stuck with what you have! Maybe you should have been more careful about how you worded that wish...

Oh well. There's no use in dwelling on it. You're a magi now, and that means adjusting to a whole new lifestyle! Maybe one of the townspeople can help you out.

Only... they're acting a bit strangely, aren't they? They're all too happy to show you around, but there's something unsettling about the way they're behaving. Almost cheerfully dissonant. Any questions about the history of the town are met with blank stares and brief silence, before they plaster a smile onto their faces and change the subject. Any attempts to tell them about your duties as a magi or anything else that relates to the magical will get similar reactions.

Isn't there anyone normal here that you can talk to at all?

Home Improvement: The houses that the magi are given access to really are something, aren't they? There's almost no limit to what they can do! Why don't you create the house of your dreams, or maybe recreate and relive your favorite childhood scenes? Invite some spectators over to marvel!

A Corrupted Soul Gem: You neglected to take care of your soul gem, and now you don't feel quite yourself anymore. You feel like you're losing your sense of self - all you seem to be able to focus on is your old regrets and past failures. What's happening to you?

A Day in the Life: Everyday hero by day, magician by night! You've got a busy day ahead of you and no time to waste! Maybe it's school, or maybe it's work, maybe it's both! Being magical doesn't make you exempt from paying those shopping bills!

May Day: Uh-oh. This magical girl stuff looked easier on TV. You're in some serious trouble! Or maybe you see someone else who is! It's time to pull up your socks and show them what you have. Be the hero you've always wanted to be, or give in and be that damsel in distress. There's no shame in needing a little help now and then.

A Successful Mission: Congratulations! You met up with your first Nightmare, and you fought valiantly. You even mastered that tricky power of yours! As if in response to your masterful victory, you feel as though you've unlocked a new power. What sort of power did you get? Is it a useful one, or is it not so useful? Maybe you've mastered it beautifully, and now you're showing off to all of your friends. Maybe you're having a hard time keeping it under wraps, and now you're wreaking havoc across the town without meaning to!

A Dreadful Nightmare: You had an absolutely horrid day. As you drift off to sleep, your mind dwells on all the injustices you've had to endure. In response, your bed swallows you up, and your room shifts into a horrific Nightmarescape. What sort of Nightmare are you? What kind of Nightmarescape do you create? Hopefully your fellow magi can stop you before you cause too much damage!

Wildcard: Feel free to use any information from the FAQ or the World Info page to make your own prompt!

You wouldn't think so, would you?

[He's not even going to huff and deny that it's a children's card game, because really, it kind of is, or at least Pegasus' incarnation of it was. Instead, Yuugi laughs softly, shaking his head and quietly wondering what a few monsters in his deck would have to say about that before shrugging it off. His deck wasn't with him, and he looks at Abdul with a bit of interest.]

I know a thing or two about dealing with ancient spirits. Not vampires, but close enough. I'm glad to hear your friends were with you.

[Yeah, Yuugi. That's not mysterious at all.]

No, I would not. Of course, after all that I have seen, I should probably stop letting myself be surprised by such things.

[Yuugi's laugh and his mention of ancient spirits does catch Abdul's attention. He is curious to know more since studying ancient things is a hobby of his, however, he also doesn't want to overstep his bounds considering he and the young man have just met.

Still, it won't do to walk in silence while they look for a Nightmare. That is why he eventually asks the question that is on his mind.]

Do these ancient spirits have names?

[personal profile] toogoodtoopure 2016-09-16 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You and me both.

[Really, of all the things he's seen, a lot of this doesn't surprise him, but at the same time it's a bit daunting. Maybe that's part of the reason why he had been so hesitant, aside from the fact that he was used to doing things like this alongside his friends. Some part of him thinks he might have said too much, and he strokes the soul gem around his neck worriedly before Abdul speaks again.

Yuugi pauses before he shakes his head.]

No, not really. [And that wasn't a lie, considering they didn't know Yami's true name yet, and he doubted Ryou knew his own Yami's name.] We just call them...Yami.
flickeringfortunes: Side (Side)

[personal profile] flickeringfortunes 2016-09-20 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
'Yami.' Are we speaking of the Japanese version of the word? The one that means 'darkness?'

[What does that say about the spirits this boy knows? Has he had to deal with evil ones his whole life?

He may be asking about the wrong definition of the word, though. Abdul knows there are other languages that use the word--some of them ones that are closer to his home of Egypt than Japan is--but something about the way the boy says it makes him think that Japanese is the correct language to reference in this case.]
toogoodtoopure: ([81])

[personal profile] toogoodtoopure 2016-09-20 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

[It would be unfair to call him evil. Sure there was that point early on where he blacked out when Yami took over, but they've grown past that. Yami grew past that, despite Yuugi's earlier trepidation about trusting the spirit of the puzzle. But he wasn't like the spirit in Ryou-kun's ring or Malik's other self.

He hesitated, remembering the duel that brought him here.

Was he wrong? It wasn't like he could simply call Yami out and ask him what he was thinking, playing that card. The cold feeling of being separated from the spirit made him reach for his soul gem again, more out of habit than anything, as he felt that small spike of anxiety.]

But that's only because we didn't know what else to call them.
flickeringfortunes: Serious (Serious)

[personal profile] flickeringfortunes 2016-09-20 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I see.

[It seems a strange thing to call spirits that are not violent or evil, but Yuugi doesn't seem all that uneasy talking about them. He may be shy or nervous because he is talking to someone he just met, but none of that seems to be directed at their topic of conversation. On that front, he seems more contemplative than anything.]

If I may ask, how did you come into contact with such ancient spirits?
toogoodtoopure: ([45])

[personal profile] toogoodtoopure 2016-09-20 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[...Well, it wasn't like the puzzle worked here, or that any other of the Millennium Items existed in this world. Yuugi bit his lip, rolling the question over in his head. Even if he told people back home, nobody would have believed him without seeing him switch out with Yami in the first place, or having prior knowledge of the items in question, so even though he hesitates a little, he nods all the same.]

I guess it's okay to tell you.

[Especially if their journey to the Nightmare's location is going to take a while.]

I must've been five or six...grandpa used to be an archaeologist in his heyday. I found a box with strange carvings in his room and asked him what it was, so he opened it up and showed me. A 3D puzzle, all golden and engraved similarly to the box, broken. He said nobody had ever been able to solve it, so I asked him if I could have it.

[Yuugi's lips quirked into a wry smile at the memory.]

He only gave it to me because he felt I was destined to have it. Even though it took me eight years to solve the puzzle.
flickeringfortunes: Surprise (Surprise)

[personal profile] flickeringfortunes 2016-09-21 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[A small frown, quickly hidden, pulls down the corners of Abdul's mouth when he hears the word 'destined.' The destinies he has interacted with have all been cruel ones. He can only hope the one this boy speaks of is not as cruel as the one that haunts the Joestar bloodline.]

Eight years? That must have been a very complex puzzle.

[Or one not meant to be solved until the bearer was ready. Abdul is willing to bet this is actually the reason. Destinies tend to work that way.]

So the spirit appeared once you solved the puzzle?
toogoodtoopure: ([80])

[personal profile] toogoodtoopure 2016-09-21 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It was. I'd try to solve it a little more before bed but I'd get stuck and have to call it a night.

[He remembered the last night, the utter relief that flooded him when he had it almost completed before he realized that Jounouchi had stolen a piece. In the end, though, he couldn't be mad at his best friend - he'd gotten it back for him, even with the beating they took from Ushio.

Yuugi nodded, then tilted his head with a small frown.]

Mmm...? Not really. I didn't really meet him until a while later. I started having blackouts and I didn't find out that it was him taking control of my body until then. I guess I was trying to deny there was another part of me.

[Abdul suddenly stops walking, concern on his face.]

You had blackouts because of him?

[As troubling as the mentioned blackouts are, the fact that this spirit took control of the young man's body and used it makes Abdul even more uneasy. It is far too similar to what DIO did to both Kakyoin and Polnareff.]

Did he ever make you do things you did not want to?

[personal profile] toogoodtoopure 2016-09-22 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
[Realizing the other magi stops, Yuugi does too, turning his head to look at him before the question makes him take pause. Did Yami make him do things? Yes and no. It was his body but he wasn't conscious...it's a difficult line. He hesitates, looking down at the ground now as he holds a hand to his arm, rubbing it almost thoughtfully.]

...Almost. I stopped it before it got worse.

[The duel with Kaiba at Duelist Kingdom comes to mind as he purses his lips together, frowning.]

Once I became aware of him, the blackouts stopped and we worked in tandem together. He listens to me and respects me.

[But he didn't listen when you told him not to play that card, a niggling voice in the back of his head commented, causing Yuugi to shake his head and reach to fiddle with the blond strands of hair framing his face.]

We've worked our way past that.
flickeringfortunes: Summon (Summon)

[personal profile] flickeringfortunes 2016-09-22 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you? You seem uncertain about that.

[Is it the contemplation? The fiddling or the frown? Maybe everything together? Abdul is not sure why his instincts make him so certain the young man is not telling the full truth when he says that, but he is quite sure there is more to it than that. It is so easy for those who are being controlled to think they are actually the ones in charge. He would hate to have this boy fall into that trap, not when he has seen so many fall into it recently.

Thanks, DIO.]

[And now they've reached the part he's been agonizing over to the point of neglecting himself. Yuugi hunches his shoulders and looks at the ground, sliding his hands into his pockets. Some part of him feels like he's telling too much to a stranger he's just met, but the other part of him knows that he needs to talk to someone.

He shakes his head.]

I don't want to trouble you...ah, especially when I don't know your name.

[And he kicks himself for that.]

Mohammed Abdul.

[There problem solved.]

And I do not mind. I would not have asked if I did. I am a fortuneteller by trade. Listening to people's problems and helping them understand the paths they can take through their uncertainties is what I do for a living.

[So speak to him, small child. What is bothering you so?]

Yuugi Mutou. It's nice to meet you, Abdul-san.

[Really grandpa would be ashamed of him for introducing himself so late, but it just proved to who knew him how much this was weighing on his mind, and in Nyoi-Cho, that didn't really amount to anyone. Scratching his cheek a little sheepishly, he glances up when the man says that. With a small sigh, he lets his hands slip into his pockets, looking thoughtful for a moment.]

Before I came here...he played a card I didn't want him to play. [Yuugi rocked back on his heels, closing his eyes and remembering the chill that ran down his spine as he was separated from the spirit.] It had been given to us at the start of the duel by the enemy and...it separated my soul from him. Even though I could see and hear what was going on, he must have been unable to say the same...I was so scared for him.
