Re: Sollux Captor // Hamsteak
basically he likes her?
when he first met her he thought she was really annoying. first off, she has this need to control things around her and that always rubs him the wrong way. of course he's totally used to people who do this. feferi is controlling, if in her own more subtle way. terezi is controlling, though she keeps control through subtle manipiulations, and finally, karkat is very controlling as well, in a verbal way. the thing is, with karkat sollux knows where the line is. he understands karkat, or at least believes he does, because he grew up in and understands troll society. he knows when he can ignore or tune out what karkat says and that no harm will come of it. this isn't the case with ryoko.
when he first met ryouko he didn't understand human societal norms or the expectations regarding social interactions. as such he found her really annoying. why couldn't she take a joke? why was she rude about him doing totally normal (taking too much food) things? why did she continue to try and control the situation after he told her she was being dumb when he could clearly tell she was anything but? i guess the most annoying thing about ryouko for him was that she was very clearly an intelligent person. sollux has a high respect for intelligence and intelligent people. still she insisted on doing things he saw as dumb and that didn't make sense to him? furthermore he didn't understand her animosity towards him so it was really just cultural confusion and misunderstandings everywhere.
however, sollux is also pretty empathetic as far as trolls are concerned. so just because he didn't get along with ryouko didn't mean he wanted anything bad to happen to her, and a lot of bad stuff kept seeming to happen to her. he doesn't even know most of what happened, what he knows is that the cooking mama he met during the flood changed a lot in between his first and second times speaking with her. she was quiet, reserved, harder to get an argument out of. he didn't like that. he didn't like that because he knew it meant something had happened to her that most people(?) didn't know about. and the kind of traumas you keep secret? yeah, those are usually the worst kind, he knows from experience.
so suddenly there is this annoying, now sad girl around him and he knows she is smart, but he doesn't understand the decisions she makes. he wants to help her, so of course what he's going to do is purposely argue with her, every chance he gets. i mean okay, first of all she has this obsession with normality. she wants things to be normal. but they aren't normal! nothing really is, sollux's life definitely never has been. i mean, sollux thinks of himself as a mutant freak, he doesn't think anything about his life has ever been normal, and though he's not happy being a mutant freak pretending he was normal wouldn't make him happy either. that kind of denial is so stupid, so why was she doing it?
he wanted her to stop that (in all capital letters) and really how was he going to convince her to stop? well he couldn't. but he could at least try to logically point out the flaws in her logic. he could work her up, make her angry, make her feel something besides sad or apathetic. the thing a lot of people don't realize is that when you're made you let things slip. sollux thinks the stuff people say when they are angry is usually a lot more honest than the things they say the rest of the time. he thinks arguing can be a good way to work out complicated feelings. it's weird but, it's just how he thinks of things, after all he spends a lot of timer arguing with even his best friends. he doesn't think there's anything wrong with it really.
however, humans do. i think sort of stalled their relationship for a while. sollux was clearly expressing interest in the goings ons of ryouko's life, but she wasn't really doing the same. almost everytime she instigated the conversation she was dismissive and judgemental, of course sollux is the same, but he at least does try to understand why people believe and act the "wrong way." ryouko didn't seem to feel the same, so they were sort of stuck at the level of casual acquaintances until the whole human month/group info sharing meeting thing. since then he's been able to understand ryouko a lot more. AND ryouko has seemed to stop caring about pretending so much, which is something sollux is really pleased about as he was getting real sick of being told how unnormal his views were.
so yeah, basically they just got to know and understand each other better, and as they did they became closer as a result of this understanding.
