first off, let me address the him thinking she's psycho bit. the thing that really shook him the most about her letting chiaki die, was that she literally just stood there, not helping at all and not looking concerned. there wasn't any sound with the videos they were shown. so he doesn't know the situation really at all, but he watched that, and it disturbed and really upset him.
now he thinks this is just fucking crazy, to be so emotionless about basically killing someone. he didn't understand azula and he didn't want to. even when he stopped trying to get revenge on azula because of chiaki telling him to quit it, he still felt like he couldn't trust her and didn't believe she was a "good" person at all because of how that whole thing want down. also she clearly doesn't respect the magi hierarchy (which in sollux's mind is basically everybody listening to madoka).
flash forward to the july event. sollux as a human kid is clearly just playing around at life. he doesn't have goals, he doesn't have a dream, he has weird respect issues. mainly he thinks people need to earn his respect and otherwise he is just going to treat them however the hell he wants. azula is nothing like this. she knows what she wants and she knows how to get it. she respects everyone. i like to imagine she put sollux in his place once and he had made respect for her for it. ever since that day he was like her bffl as the kids say these days. she kept him in line, exposed him to new things, caused him to meet new people. his human self was honestly a better person for having met her.
now july is over. sollux knows those memories were fake, but he still remembers getting along with azula and actually valuing her friendship. their fake friendship gave him a lot of validation he hasn't ever had before and desperately desires. he knows it wasn't real, but that kind of relationship is one he desires, so it's hard for him to admit that it was all totally made up. afterall, it wasn't like he was so totally different from himself that whole month. he was just a little more immature. is it possible the azula he knew then is in azula right now? could any part of her be that person? because honestly, if she was, he'd want to be friends with her.
still, he knows that isn't this azula. he knows that's not how she acts or how she thinks of herself. still, he feels weird just pretending that whole part of his life here didn't happen (even though it didn't). did she think of the memories as totally fake? did she want to forget them? if she didn't how cruel would it be for him to pretend he had forgotten. basically, when it comes to azula, right now he's taking it step by step. the fake relationship they had in july has effected him in a strong way. he actually finds himself "caring" about azula's well being right now, and wants to help her. especially if it means she becomes more like the person he fake remembers.
im looking forward to this causing a lot of drama, because obviously azula is not that person. sollux basically sticking around her hoping to see that side come forward is kind of a dick move on his part and i think it will be a lot of fun to play out the complexity of that kind of a relationship.
Weeks late
Looking forward to the fallout is one thing that's desperately pushing me back towards getting in the game. Azula is so wonderfully uncomfortable and confused by what she's experienced and coming back a month after that isn't going to help. (Of course I'll be playing out the scenes I started last month before she wakes up)
