Arrival: So you've just arrived in Nyoi-Cho. Congratulations! You must be so excited about having your wish granted. Or maybe you're upset that the result wasn't quite what you expected? If that's the case, then that's too bad! There are no take backs and no redoes, so you're stuck with what you have! Maybe you should have been more careful about how you worded that wish...

Oh well. There's no use in dwelling on it. You're a magi now, and that means adjusting to a whole new lifestyle! Maybe one of the townspeople can help you out.

Only... they're acting a bit strangely, aren't they? They're all too happy to show you around, but there's something unsettling about the way they're behaving. Almost cheerfully dissonant. Any questions about the history of the town are met with blank stares and brief silence, before they plaster a smile onto their faces and change the subject. Any attempts to tell them about your duties as a magi or anything else that relates to the magical will get similar reactions.

Isn't there anyone normal here that you can talk to at all?

Home Improvement: The houses that the magi are given access to really are something, aren't they? There's almost no limit to what they can do! Why don't you create the house of your dreams, or maybe recreate and relive your favorite childhood scenes? Invite some spectators over to marvel!

A Corrupted Soul Gem: You neglected to take care of your soul gem, and now you don't feel quite yourself anymore. You feel like you're losing your sense of self - all you seem to be able to focus on is your old regrets and past failures. What's happening to you?

A Dreadful Nightmare: You had an absolutely horrid day. As you drift off to sleep, your mind dwells on all the injustices you've had to endure. In response, your bed swallows you up, and your room shifts into a horrific Nightmarescape. What sort of Nightmare are you? What kind of Nightmarescape do you create? Hopefully your fellow magi can stop you before you cause too much damage!

[ It was tied to his presence at home. If he was here, it meant that the wish couldn't technically be fulfiled. Either he would be sent home, or that Kyuubey had been a liar. ]

Other than the natives, have you seen anything else of note?

Undoubtedly. Anything that promises power is usually not offering it to you out of the goodness of its heart.

[As for seeing anything of note...]

Not as of yet, no. I admittedly have not been here for all that long, so all I have had a chance to see are the streets we're on now, and the citizens, such as they are. Nothing yet of nightmares or witches. I will most certainly keep my eyes peeled, though.

And you? Anything noteworthy?

None as well. Save for the citizens, this town seems typical. It has the usual amenities, and trains to neighbouring towns as well. Though whether we can get there safely still remains a question.

[ He did ask some of the locals about the place, but they never answered. ]

Can you fight on your own, without the wish-given powers?

I can, given the proper weapons. Knitting needles can be surprisingly effective, should you know how to wield them. Very good at blinding.

[A small smile crosses her face, as though she is remembering a funny moment in her life.]

I was also able to use some amount of magic before coming here, though I am unsure of how the skills will translate. I will need to find a safe place to test things. And you?

[ He isn't quite sure how to react to that. Again, perhaps it had something to do with her very long story of a past. ]

I know the basics of hand-to-hand combat, but no magic. [ Most of the fight scenes he had participated in were acting. It's a shame. ]

Hand to hand combat can be very useful in the right circumstances - plus, having those instinctual skills will be useful regardless what type of battle you're waging. It's a good foundation to have.

They're supposed to be supplemented by magi powers, but I'm not sure if they are safe to use just yet.

[ You know, soul contracts and the like. He hasn't tried yet. ]

Have you accessed yours?

My magi powers, you mean?

[She's aware of the power she was granted, mostly because it's a passive ability that she can't turn off. It's very weak for now, due to the uncertainty of her situation, but there are still a few pings every now and then, guiding her through her travel of the town.]

As far as I can tell, I'm always accessing them. I can... sense the consequences of certain actions. It's not very strong, but it's let me avoid things like tripping over uneven steps at least. I suppose it could be useful in battle.

What of yourself? Do you know what kind of ability you've gained?

[ Seeing the consequences of actions... well, doesn't that sound like future sight to him. If this was any other situation, he wouldn't have believed her, but seeing what had already been wrought here it feels as if even he had to give some allowances. ]

You would play a good strategist, then.

[ But as for his own... ]

I know what it can do, but I have not used it yet. It lets me summon crystals.

[ There's also a passive ability, but he doesn't know that yet. ]

Crystals...?

[Now that's interesting. It also does not sound particularly useful for battling, which is their supposed purpose here after all.]

Do they have any particular powers? Latent magical abilities, perhaps? Or are they simply shiny rocks?

I doubt so. However, they have some use.

[ He'd already used one as a mirror for Kongou. He doesn't know it yet, but their edges are extremely sharp - even a light touch can draw blood. ]

I haven't used them in battle yet, but I expect the 'how will become clear when I summon them in said situation.

That's true. Perhaps they are context based. At any rate, you could always throw them at somebody in a pinch. It might startle them enough to give you time to run if you are in really dire straits.

[Her lips quirk at the thought of that. It probably wouldn't be the most graceful maneuver, but it would be amusing to watch, if nothing else.]

I suspect a lot of things will become more clear when we are actually expected to engage in combat, in fact. I almost find myself looking forward to it; it should be a good opportunity to get some answers.

[ Tokiya has a much more elegant mental image of that. ]

Answers are important, but there's the price to pay for that.

[ Combat means injury, possibly death. Of course, Tokiya himself would pay the utmost care, and Rose seemed like the sort to do the same - but what about the others? ]

I'd almost expect missions on bulletin boards, at this rate.

Yes, there typically is a price to pay for answers - though it is one usually worth paying, in my experience.

[Rose doesn't like being kept in the dark, needless to say. Especially not when she's in a strange place like this.]

And what, like video game quests? I admit, I wouldn't be much surprised either. In fact, this whole scenario would make more sense as a game, right down to the generically cheerful NPCs.

[ A few months ago, Tokiya might have agreed with her. Right now, he would almost agree with her as well. After all, he had very little to lose except his own life. ]

Game it might be, but it's one we're playing with our lives.

I have plenty of things to do and none of them involve standing around in a simulated town.
