Prompts

Arrival: So you've just arrived in Nyoi-Cho. Congratulations! You must be so excited about having your wish granted. Or maybe you're upset that the result wasn't quite what you expected? If that's the case, then that's too bad! There are no take backs and no redoes, so you're stuck with what you have! Maybe you should have been more careful about how you worded that wish...

Oh well. There's no use in dwelling on it. You're a magi now, and that means adjusting to a whole new lifestyle! Maybe one of the townspeople can help you out.

Only... they're acting a bit strangely, aren't they? They're all too happy to show you around, but there's something unsettling about the way they're behaving. Almost cheerfully dissonant. Any questions about the history of the town are met with blank stares and brief silence, before they plaster a smile onto their faces and change the subject. Any attempts to tell them about your duties as a magi or anything else that relates to the magical will get similar reactions.

Isn't there anyone normal here that you can talk to at all?

Home Improvement: The houses that the magi are given access to really are something, aren't they? There's almost no limit to what they can do! Why don't you create the house of your dreams, or maybe recreate and relive your favorite childhood scenes? Invite some spectators over to marvel!

A Corrupted Soul Gem: You neglected to take care of your soul gem, and now you don't feel quite yourself anymore. You feel like you're losing your sense of self - all you seem to be able to focus on is your old regrets and past failures. What's happening to you?

A Successful Mission: Congratulations! You met up with your first Witch, and you fought valiantly. For your efforts, you've been awarded a grief seed - and with it, access to a brand new power! What sort of power did you get? Is it a useful one, or is it not so useful? Maybe you've mastered it beautifully, and now you're showing off to all of your friends. Maybe you're having a hard time keeping it under wraps, and now you're wreaking havoc across the town without meaning to!

A Dreadful Nightmare: You had an absolutely horrid day. As you drift off to sleep, your mind dwells on all the injustices you've had to endure. In response, your bed swallows you up, and your room shifts into a horrific Nightmarescape. What sort of Nightmare are you? What kind of Nightmarescape do you create? Hopefully your fellow magi can stop you before you cause too much damage!

Wildcard: Feel free to use any information from the FAQ or the World Info page to make your own prompt!
joylesslove: There's a noise upstairs. (05. And you're all alone)

Ah, I understand. You worry because they aren not acting as you believe they should.

[A valid concern, in the Doll's eyes. After all, if a Hunter of her world finds someone to be acting strangely, there's no telling what could happen - they might turn into a monster, or go on a murderous spree, or they might not do anything at all. It makes sense that one might be disquieted by the strange behavior of another.

The Doll doesn't really agree with Rose's theory on the values of emotional freedom, however.
]

I am not certain I would agree, good Magi. These people, would they be better off if they had the ability to suffer? If they mistrusted one another and feared and felt suffering?

Of course, I am but a lowly Doll. Perhaps my views do not latter, but I am similar to these humans in a way, and I so not feel as thou th I suffer for it. [ In fact, in many ways she embraces it.] Perhaps they are the same way?

[ Again, she bows her head out of respect. ]

Forgive me. I understand that you may not be familiar with the way things are here, but truly I see nothing wrong with these people, and with the happiness they feel.

[Rose takes a moment to compose her answer, wanting to make sure that her wording is as she wants it to be.]

Emotions exist for an evolutionary reason. There is not a dichotomy between happiness and suffering - there are a myriad of experiences in between, not all of which are pleasant, but the majority of which are necessary.

For instance, true compassion cannot exist without the ability to feel sadness, to understand why someone else might be suffering. One cannot learn from their mistakes if they never feel guilt. Anger is often what fuels the drive to change and better the world around you. Fear allows us to know when it is best to flee, to preserve our own well-being.

[She gives a small bow as well, wanting to be respectful. She doesn't fault the doll for having the views she does - if anything, it makes for an interesting philosophical counter point.]

I suppose that's not to say that the people here - or you - are "wrong," as that is a subjective term in this situation. But for those of us who do feel the full breadth of emotions, their constant happiness is undeniably disconcerting.
joylesslove: There's a door (06. At the top of the stairs)

[The Doll makes a thoughtful noise at that, and raises a finger to her chin inquisitively. It's a motion entirely for Rose's sake, the Doll's way of expressing her interest without a movable face. She's quite well-practiced at emoting this way.]

Yes, perhaps. Or perhaps that is what humans tell themselves, to make themselves feel better about the sadness they must endure.

[The sentence itself might read as argumentative, but her tone is soft and far away, as if it genuinely saddens her that humans suffer in the ways they do.]

Joy is not something that comes easily to me, but... I felt it once. And so I understand how these people must feel. It is a good feeling, yes? Humans do so much in the pursuit of happiness - why does it seem so wrong to you, that they have succeeded?

[Sorry, Rose, she just doesn't understand.]

I am sorry, though, if these people or I... disconcert you, good Magi.

That is not my intention. It is my wish to cause comfort, not unease.

To be honest, you I don't find disconcerting. You are an isolated element - just one person.

[Or... doll or android or whatever it is that she is, exactly.]

In truth, the most worrying thing about these townspeople for me is that the lack of emotional range can make their actions unpredictable. Many of us use emotional responses as indicators of what somebody might do next. For instance, if you were planning to attack me - and this is a hypothetical, mind, I am not trying to cast suspicion on you - I would have little warning. I would not be able to read any signs of anxiety, or any anger off of you, and you would be able to get the jump on me.

Now, if you were to attack me - again, I am not insinuating that you will - then we are evenly matched, even if you gain the element of surprise. One on one. If these people here, who I don't know the motives of and who I am unable to read, decided to attack en masse, I would, most succinctly, be fucked. No warning and heavily outmatched. And even now, I have no assurance that this is not what they are planning, because I have no way of knowing.

So while this possibility is unlikely, it does exist. Misreading one person can be dangerous, but survivable. Misreading an entire town? That could be deadly.

Ah... Hm.

[That's the only noise she makes, her face still quite expressionless as she listens to Rose speak. To be honest, it upsets her a little to hear Rose speak of being attacked by her - the mere thought of raising a hand to this girl (or to anyone, really) would be enough to turn her stomach, if only she had one.]

I... think I understand. It is normal, for humans to not want to die.

[It's clear from her tone that she doesn't really feel the same way about death. She doesn't fear it. To be honest, she's not entirely certain that it's an applicable concept to her at all. It certainly wasn't before she was brought here, at least.]

Rest assured, dear Magi. I will not harm you. I can hardly imagine such a terrible thing - I love you far too much.

[That might seem like quite the commitment to make with someone who never even told the Doll her name, but it really isn't. She loves humans, after all, and Rose definitely appears to be one of those.]

As I said, I mentioned that merely for hypothetical reasons, not due to any real... suspicions...

[Rose trails off as she registers the final thing that the doll said, because that's new. Love is a pretty loaded term. It's one she's heard from Kanaya, but never a stranger. And especially not from a robot-doll who was not evidently programmed with the full emotional spectrum.]

Excuse me. You love me? In what sense is that exactly?
joylesslove: That always follows you (11. And there's a creepy doll)

[personal profile] joylesslove 2015-12-10 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I love you.

[She stares Rose straight in the eyes for a moment, as if she's unsure of why this would be a startling revelation.]

Is that so strange? It is how I was created, after all; to feel the way I do, so that I might take care of the human hunters who come to me.

[Rose misunderstands entirely. The fact that the Doll wasn't made with a full spectrum of emotions doesn't mean that she's unfeeling and heartless. Quite the opposite, really - she cares quite deeply for the humans she meets.]

It is... Not unlike the humans of this place, in that way. An emotion that I cannot help but feel, although I know it to be real and true.

[A pause, and then with some uncertainty in her voice:]

I am sorry, does this bother you to learn?

[Well, that calms her a little. It isn't as though the doll has simply decided, in their philosophical discussion of emotional capacity, that she is in love with Rose. It's something programmed into her, and something she evidently feels towards all people. Not a specific emotion for Rose herself.]

No, no, you're fine. I simply misunderstood. "Love" can be a rather loaded term in certain situations, and I was unsure what context you were employing it in. Please don't worry yourself.

Also, I do believe I have been somewhat rude - we never did introductions. Do you have a name of any sort? I am Rose.

[ The Doll makes a small noise at that. Not much, but enough to signify through her tone that she is relieved to hear that she hasn't upset Rose. ]

You must come from quite a strange place, then, if love is such a confusing thing.

[ Kind of a ridiculous claim to be made by a living doll, but the Hunter's Dream is all The Plain Doll has ever known, and her love has always seemed like a relatively simple constant throughout her existence.]

Ah, you flatter me, good Magi. No, I am but a doll, created to aid the hunters of my world. Now that the Hunt has ended, I suppose I am intended to aid the Magi of this one, as they begin a hunt of their own.

[ It saddens her to be taken away from her beloved hunters. Particularly from the Hunter who had slain the Moon Presence and ascended into a higher state of being. Still, there is nothing that she can do about that at the moment. ]

Rose is a lovely name, though.
