Britain was...

[Deep breath.]

Well, at the time I was alive, it was the frontier of civilization. The Roman Empire had long since retreated from it, leaving a legacy of education and philosophy intermixed with the faith and magic of the actual Britons. It also left a legacy of war as hundreds of petty kings and princes fought to divide the Isles between themselves in the centuries-long power vacuum. It was a land both old and new, where anything could - and frequently did - happen, full of wonder, beauty, darkness, and cruelty all at once.

As for being a knight there...it was...mostly hypocritical. Knights were taught to be honorable and noble, and then sent into pointless conflict with the next kingdom. Trained to protect our king's subjects while robbing and slaughtering the other king's. Some, many even, sought to rose above this cycle of warfare and unite the land into peaceful cooperation, but it was a constant struggle...one that I'm not sure ever ended.

Perhaps what your kingdom needed, then, was a queen to unite the people, and rule over than all.

[ As soon as those words escape her, the Doll blinks in confusion. Why had she said that?

Something about Cainhearst queen... She has heard tales of such a woman from the hunters. Yes, that must have been what she was thinking of.

[She raises an eyebrow.]

A queen?

[She shakes her head.]

Britain wouldn't have accepted a Queen Regnant in that era - only a king. You're right in principle, though. The only way anything was going to improve was a king taking charge and unifying the land under a single just rule, of law and cooperation instead of "might makes right" and "you get what you grab".

That's a long and difficult road, though...for anyone.

Truly? How strange.

[ It isn't as though Yharnam is without its own forms of sexism, mind you. The Doll has met all kinds of hunters who have made their widely varying opinions known.

Still, it feels strange to hear of the idea being outright denied in such a way. Perhaps because tm she has never heard any stories of a place with a king anywhere.

It's the way of my world. Or was at the time, at any rate.

I hear that England, the successor to the Britain of my day, had at least three golden ages under queens, so perhaps it's changed now.
