FEBRUARY TEST DRIVE MEME

Test Drive Meme

Prompts

Arrival: So you've just arrived in Nyoi-Cho. Congratulations! You must be so excited about having your wish granted. Or maybe you're upset that the result wasn't quite what you expected? If that's the case, then that's too bad! There are no take backs and no redoes, so you're stuck with what you have! Maybe you should have been more careful about how you worded that wish...

Oh well. There's no use in dwelling on it. You're a magi now, and that means adjusting to a whole new lifestyle! Maybe one of the townspeople can help you out.

Only... they're acting a bit strangely, aren't they? They're all too happy to show you around, but there's something unsettling about the way they're behaving. Almost cheerfully dissonant. Any questions about the history of the town are met with blank stares and brief silence, before they plaster a smile onto their faces and change the subject. Any attempts to tell them about your duties as a magi or anything else that relates to the magical will get similar reactions.

Isn't there anyone normal here that you can talk to at all?

Home Improvement: The houses that the magi are given access to really are something, aren't they? There's almost no limit to what they can do! Why don't you create the house of your dreams, or maybe recreate and relive your favorite childhood scenes? Invite some spectators over to marvel!

A Day in the Life: Everyday hero by day, magician by night! You've got a busy day ahead of you and no time to waste! Maybe it's school, or maybe it's work, maybe it's both! Being magical doesn't make you exempt from paying those shopping bills!

Practice makes Perfect: This magi stuff sure looked easier on TV. You don't understand your power and it's frustrating trying to use it in combat when you don't get it. Maybe it's time to just take some time to figure this out. Good thing none of the citizens can see you when you transform! Test out those new skills, cause a little mischief, or be the helping hand someone might need!

Fighting Evil by Moonlight: Things aren't as easy as they looked on TV. Nightmares are tough and there's real danger in there. There are victories... but, some are not as clear cut as others. Is today a successful attempt, or are you on your last legs standing up against an enemy far stronger than yourself? Do you forge on ahead, or do you retreat?

A Corrupted Soul Gem: You neglected to take care of your soul gem, and now you don't feel quite yourself anymore. You feel like you're losing your sense of self - all you seem to be able to focus on is your old regrets and past failures. What's happening to you?

A Dreadful Nightmare: You had an absolutely horrid day. As you drift off to sleep, your mind dwells on all the injustices you've had to endure. In response, your bed swallows you up, and your room shifts into a horrific Nightmarescape. What sort of Nightmare are you? What kind of Nightmarescape do you create? Hopefully your fellow magi can stop you before you cause too much damage!

A Witch's Curse: A Nightmare is nothing in comparison to the horror of a Witch. Perhaps you've been bitten by her sweet kiss, now only able to see the futility in all you do. Perhaps you've just witnessed one of your most beloved friends succumbing to the darkness in their heart, forsaking their wish for a curse - or perhaps you have decided to do it yourself. One thing is for sure... there's no turning back now.

Wildcard: Feel free to use any information from the FAQ or the World Info page to make your own prompt!

A Day in the Life
(canonpoint: end of Chapter 13)

To be honest, it could be better.

No one ever said that the crown prince had any particular taste or skill in the fine art of architecture and interior decorating. In that respect, it was probably a good thing that the exterior was fixed and couldn't be changed - why anyone let him have control over the decal choices for the Regalia is anyone's guess. But nobody complained, so either the gang didn't want to object and offend their prince's tastes, or (obviously) they all had equally poor decorating taste. If any of the guy showed up here, they're bound to feel right at home.

If. Noctis thinks about that, a lot.

It's precisely why there's a fishing spot in his house. Just around the corner from the quaint, cozy living room reminiscent of a laidback apartment he'd once lived in during his school years despite the occasional bizarre colour pattern along the wall, the floor becomes wooden planks and leads directly to a small, indoor pond - complete with lilypads and tall grass. A frog even hops by every so often. Sometimes it breaks out into showtunes. But for the most part, it's where he goes to relax, to get his mind off of ... everything.

That doesn't always work. It's only been a few days, and everything had happened so quickly, that it was hard not to think about it. His friends were still fighting back there without him. His entire homeworld was being consumed by night, and the daemons were only growing stronger and in greater numbers. There's only so many times he can be told there's nothing he can do to go back, no matter how grave the danger is and how important it was that he be sent home, before he loses his temper and storms off back to his new home to sit at the edge of his indoor dock and sulk. And fish.

Suffice it to say, he fishes a lot.

The problem with indoor fishing is that ... well. It's indoors. Anytime he happens to catch a fish - like now, for example - it catches him off guard, and in his excitement to scramble to his feet and reel the fish in, he pulls a little too hard, and the line snaps, sending the fish flying out the open window. It always disappears (it's a frequent occurrence,) but he still hurries to make his way over to the window, and wave an apology at any potential passers by.

"H-Hey, uh, sorry! They're, uh ... slippery."

Noriaki Kakyoin was, admittedly, not often well known for either his patience or control of his temper. And while he usually managed to have a handle on both in a high-pressure situation like everything Nyoi-cho decided to be 24/7, there were some things one could not possibly prepare for.

Like a giant fish flying quite literally out of left field to smack him directly in the face before promptly disappearing into thin air. Clearly, he'd chosen the wrong house to walk a bit too close to today. The redhead staggered from the impact, glasses knocked off scarred eyes and clattering to the sidewalk as he tried to catch up with what on earth had just actually happened.

"What th--who the hell even thinks to throw a fish?!"

Apparently, the people around here just didn't understand how difficult it was to fish indoors.

"I didn't throw it."

Noctis felt his response was accurate enough - technically, the fish wasn't thrown. Not on purpose. At most, he could be blamed for accidentally leaving the window open and giving the fish the opportunity to go sailing out of it to the great outdoors just once before unfortunately disappearing. But since he didn't throw the fish, the prince holds his ground, hands on his hips as the stranger outside cusses at him.

"I was catching it. And it got away."

"I--you--"

You know what? Fair enough. Kakyoin pressed a hand to his face to collect himself before looking away to locate his glasses.

"What on earth are you doing fishing in there?"

Some people just don't get how difficult it is to fish indoors, apparently.

"I'm fishing."

It seems like the obvious answer - technically, the guy answered his own question in the first place, so as far as he's concerned Noctis is just repeating after him at this point - but it really is a bit of an odd situation to stumble into in the middle of an otherwise ordinary day. He can get behind that.

"Didn't mean to startle you. Sorry about that."

Even before Diarmuid's reflexes were heightened by battle and enhanced supernaturally, they were fast. This is fortunate, since the last thing he is expecting is to have a fish come flying at his head as he walks back from working at the dog cafe. Despite the supernatural enhancements to his reflexes being stripped away, he manages to catch the fish by the tail before it gracelessly slams into his head. In the seconds before it vanishes, he holds it up and gauges its size. The 'not bad' that is muttered under his breath goes basically unheard when a voice from the nearby house calls out an apology.

Fish now long gone, Diarmuid lets his empty hand fall back to his side as he makes his way over to the window with a grin, "Looks like you let the big one get away."

Oh dear god, Diarmuid? Really?

Fortunately, the new arrival is saved from more bad puns when Diarmuid's eyes catch sight of the fishing pool in the house behind him, "It's too bad the things our houses make vanish when they leave them. I bet the fish from that pond would taste great baked over the fire pit in my house."

Well. That's impressive.

At least the guy caught it. It's far less embarrassing that way, and Noctis doesn't have to feel too bad about letting the bastard fish get away like that. It's still troublesome, of course, and not exactly the best first impression to make among the neighbours (something he hasn't exactly been very good at throughout his lifetime anyway,) but the stranger outside seems like he's in good spirits about it.

That's good, at least. Easier to have casual conversations with someone who wasn't yelling at you for throwing fish around.

"Yeah, not for a lack of trying, though." Noctis leans against his windowsil and props his chin in his hand, trying to keep things friendly even though random flying fish is still a thing that happened. "Can't tease a guy like that, though. Fire pit fish sounds amazing and I have no way to bring all this fish over."

Diarmuid has only ever been fish slapped once in his life and that was because he let his best friend, Oscar, do it. Yes, he let him do it. That is his story and he's sticking to it.

Confident another fish isn't about to come flying at him because of his terrible sense of humor, Diarmuid offers his hand for a shake. Most people just gets confused when he tries bowing to them, "It is a travesty, isn't it? We need to work this out somehow. Our houses can change when we think about it. Ever think of 'remodeling' your kitchen?"

They could just go and buy some fish at the store then take it to Diarmuid's place to cook, but where's the fun in that?

[personal profile] nihte 2017-02-22 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
Going out and buying fish would just be an insult, honestly. While Noctis hadn't exactly been out and about to explore all the ins and outs of Nyoi-Cho just yet, surely there was a similar sort of fishing spot around where some actual fishing could be done, without having to worry about the fish disappearing into thin air just because they happen to get tossed out a window.

Presumably outdoor fishing wouldn't be as startling a thing for strangers to witness, but considering all the strangeness going on so far, it's hard to say.

"I guess that's an option," the prince answers, reaching out the window to grasp the fellow's hand for a firm shake. "Next step would probably be learning how to cook, though. Without setting the house on fire."

[personal profile] oathshackledbird 2017-02-22 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Diarmuid returns the handshake just as firmly and then lets out a laugh, "Give me only a fire and I can cook you a banquet. Give me anything else and I will ruin your kitchen."

If it sounds like some kind of proverb or sage advice, that just goes to show how very true it is when applied to him.

"Microwaves, stoves, toasters, refrigerators. Modern day has sure come up with some strange devices to complicate things with."

Even though he's trying to keep reminding himself of it, Noctis has the occasional moment where he forgets that not everybody is from the same world he is, and that things like microwaves and stoves and otherwise ordinary kitchen appliances are not always ordinary household objects to everyone else. At the very least, he figures it probably should help the situation some when he doesn't always know how to use them himself - not without proper supervision or otherwise disastrous results, of course.

"Think we'd get along, then," he answers, glad that there's not really any reprimand for the fish tossing and they can just talk about ... fire, apparently.

"You do all your cooking over a campfire, huh? You hunt, or does stuff to cook just randomly appear in your house too?"
oathshackledbird: Pondering (Pondering)

[personal profile] oathshackledbird 2017-03-01 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
"I wish we could hunt, but we are trapped in this city and there isn't a whole lot of challenge in going after rabbits and squirrels in the park," Diarmuid rolls his eyes and sighs. "Most of the time it's putting together things I get from a store or have generated by the house. There are a few good restaurants I like going to when I'm not cooking myself. I wonder..."

Is he seriously thinking of changing the inside of his house so it becomes a forest he can hunt in? He just may be doing so, even if it would drain a lot of energy from his soul gem. It would be worth it.
nihte: © ᴘᴏɴᴘᴏɴᴘᴏɴ (086.)

[personal profile] nihte 2017-03-02 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that much was certainly true. Not much meat on smaller creatures, and there were tricky prey for hunters - speedy, quick to hide, and small targets in general. Though Noctis can't help feeling just a little disappointed that there's no opportunity for hunting here, but at the same time, he wonders if it'd even be any fun at all if he was out hunting monsters on his own without his friends.

But now's not a good time for moping about it, so he straightens up, and tries to keep that thought from his mind for a while.

"Now restaurants, I can do," Noctis answers with more confidence, deciding not to think for the moment about how he's supposed to afford a restaurant dinner here. "Whatever it is that gets someone else to do the cooking instead of me."

"Well, you are in luck then. For a seemingly small town, there are quite a few nice cafes and restaurants. When I have the money, I tend to treat myself to a new one since I am so unfamiliar with modern foods," he loves trying new things. Every week it seems like he finds a new favorite something or other.

"What are your favorite foods? I'll see if I can point you in the right direction."

If.

A two letter word with so much possibilities. Something Prompto had been thinking about since slipped off the roof of the train and ended up in the life he should've been spared from. If Noctis and the others show up, will they save him? If they save him, will they forgive him for all he'd never told them? And if they did... what then?

Imagine his surprise when things went right for once. When the doors swung open and there they were, helping him out of his restraints and being real and reaffirming everything about him was real. If they could pull this off, if they could get the Crystal and if they could get out and back to Insomnia then everything was finally going to be a-okay.

But if is a pretty big word for just being two letters. If is a coinflip, there's a fifty per cent chance of getting what you want and being left in the dust... and if he's being honest, he thinks maybe all of the luck they needed to get back problem-free was wasted on his rescue. The world isn't so kind.

So of course when a little creature shows up offering a miracle, he takes it. He doesn't even think that hard, all he knows is they need to get Noctis back and the words come unbidden. The wish is granted, he can never go home - but the world he leaves behind is safe. Prompto staggers into the new one, confused, bruised, and more than a little lost.

That's about when a fish comes flying through the window and slaps him in the face, bowling him over. Any pretenses of sulky, serious, Noct-esque brooding are thrown aside as he splutters, grabbing for the fish but finding it gone before he can even process what it was or where it came from. ]

"W-what the hell, man!?" He pushes himself up, ready to shout because all this pent up aggression needs some kind of out - but he stops short, staring at the man in the window dumbly.

i forgot the spoiler warning oops what a great first impression

[personal profile] nihte 2017-02-14 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
To be perfectly honest, that was probably not the best way to reunite with a close friend. That could've gone better ... much better.

But all things considered, it also could've gone worse.

He remembers having to turn away from them, growing an intense and burning hatred for the phrases for the greater good and it's a king's duty with every step further towards the Crystal he took. Just because he knew it was what he had to do, that didn't necessarily mean it was something he was eagerly jumping at the gate for. Everything was somewhat hazy after that, he knows he made a choice and looking back on it, it wasn't the best one - what about everyone back home? What about the daemons, the darkness, all of his friends, what was going to happen to them now that he was here? Everyone was relying on him.

He'd thought, once or twice, that this world was some sort of ... bizarre hallucination brought on by his time spent reflecting. It certainly wouldn't be beyond the realm of believability, with all the strange things happening here in Nyoi-Cho. But once he spots the first familiar face in what feels like years, he certainly hopes it's no delusion.

"I was passing it to you."

Obviously.

Noctis is caught off guard first, but he's quick to fall back into old habits, and teasing his friends has always been one of them. Though his sarcastic tone is betrayed by the grin on his face, as he leans further out the window to call out to his apparently dumbstruck friend.

"Your fault for not catching it."

ITS NO WORRIES HELLO how is your day going

[personal profile] selfiesteem 2017-02-14 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It is him.

Time starts moving again, Prompto doesn't even have time to berate him for what is most certainly the worst excuse for throwing a fish at someone he's ever heard in his life. That gets his mouth working again, though all that comes out is a strangled kind of laugh as he pushes himself to his feet and resists everything he has in him not to just tackle his friend and hug him through the window.

Resisting...

Resisting.

Nah. Nope. Not happening. Noct leans further out the window and Prompto is taking advantage of that for what is both the shortest lived and most uncomfortably positioned hug the world has ever known.

"You jerk! I was worried about you!"
nihte: © ᴘᴏɴᴘᴏɴᴘᴏɴ (085.)

oh you know, just taking forever to reply to things, so ... peachy?

[personal profile] nihte 2017-02-22 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
It's awkward, and he feels for more than a moment that he's about to be pulled right out of the window to land on his face in the dirt below, but it would be a minor inconvenience considering the situation. Leaving them all behind had been one of the hardest things he'd ever done, forcing himself to look away and take the next step forward for the sake of their entire world, all the while wondering what would become of them and if he'd ever see them again ...

He does wonder if the others are here, if Ignis would pop up from around a corner to scold him for wasting food so casually, if Gladio would follow and lecture him on his poor technique and letting the line snap. Maybe it's a little too much to hope for, but it's just weird for them all to be separated - so he hopes, while holding on almost desperately tight just in case this happens to be a dream and he wakes up all too soon.

"Hey, don't be worried about me, I can handle myself," Noctis answers, trying to sound confident but the way his voice shakes and his fingers curl tight into Prompto's vest give away how he really feels. Being on his own is the worst.

"I was worried about you. Can't even catch a fish being thrown at your head, you know."

"Y-yeah, well, it's not every day your best bud gets eaten by a giant rock, okay?" He's hugging him tight, face buried against his shoulder. "You can't blame a guy for freaking out a little!"

There's a laugh, giddy and relieved. He holds his friend tighter, his whole body feeling as though he's able to breathe for the first time since everything went down on that train.

"We're fine. We're all fine. I -- that little cat-rat thing showed up and I just -- I wished for you back and, and here you are!"

And he's probably there too.
